Happy Birthday AVON

2011 09 07 16.22.24 Happy Birthday 125 yearsAVON are celebrating their 125th Anniversary on 15th September…well in fact there have been anniversary celebrations all year long.

There have been all sorts of celebrations, events, articles and promotions to celebrate this landmark birthday.

I was fortunate enough to attend the 125th Anniversary Event at the LG Arena in Birmingham earlier in the year.  We got to hear from Andrea Jung (CEO of AVON), Yasmin-Le-Bon, Olly Murs, Karren Brady along with top representatives and other great guest speakers.

How did AVON Start?

Back in 1886, David H McConnell started selling books door-to-door in the USA.  He was running a customer incentive of a free bottle of perfume with every book sale.  He noticed that it was the bottle of perfume which was making women buy his books.

So, he launched his own company called the California Perfume Company.   He had a big dream of selling his perfume via a network of spirited entrepreneurs direct to people’s houses.  The California Perfume Company was launched with a range of 5 fragrances and a range of everyday essential items.

The 1st AVON Lady

Mrs P.F.E. Albee of Winchester, New Hampshire in the USA was the very first AVON lady.  She sold products herself and recruited other women to do the same.  This became the role model for representatives today.  This was at the time when women didn’t have the right to vote in the USA and were expected to stay at home.

Why call it AVON?

McConnell visited Stratford-on-Avon and was struck by the beauty of the countryside.  He introduced a product line called “AVON” which was a toothbrush, talcum powder, and vanity set. In 1939, the company’s name was changed to AVON Products Inc.

How long has AVON been in the UK?

AVON came to the UK on 9th October 1959.  This is over 50 years.  You can even view the very 1st AVON Brochure in the UK.

The AVON Head Office is based in Northampton.

Interesting AVON Facts
